September 12th, 2008 — Cape Verde, Praia
The Tourism and Hotel School, seen as being fundamental for the qualification of tourism in Cape Verde, is expected to be ready in 2010 after construction work on it began Monday in Praia, according to website semanaonline.
The new schools will cover and area of 4,743 square metres, in Palmarejo de Cima, in Praia, next to Piaget University, and is a project funded by Luxembourg, which will provide most of the 600 million Cape Verdean escudos needed for its construction. Read more ..
September 12th, 2008 — Cape Verde, Praia
I read recently that the government of Cape Verde plans to buy a new ship to increase links between islands, as part of a funding agreement signed at the end of the first half of the year with Spain, according to newspaper A Semana.
The paper added that the minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Telecommunications said that his ministry was finalising the project and the respective tender document for selecting the shipyard that will build the future vessel.
The ship will be a mixed ship for transporting cargo and around 250 passengers. Read more ..

The 12th edition of the Cape Verde International Fair, (FIC) is scheduled to be hosted in Praia between the 19th and 23rd of November, the fair’s organisers FIC - Commercial Free Zone of Cape Verde said this week. The aim of the FIC is to give companies the opportunity of indentifying new customers and partners as well as promote their image, products and services. The organisers say that companies wishing to take part in this annual trade fair can register with them up until October the 10th 2008.

Praia, Cape Verde, 21 Aug - In 2007 Portugal was the main trading partner of Cape Verde, having been the destination of 58.3 percent of all Cape Verdean exports and the origin of 45 percent of the archipelago’s imports, according to the Portugal-Cape Verde Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
According to a statement on the Chamber’s website, after Portugal the archipelago’s next biggest partners were the Netherlands and France.
In 2007, Cape Verde’s imports rose 26.6 percent year on year and exports fell by 15 percent. The country’s trade deficit increased by 28.1 percent in the period.
Cape Verde’s amin exports are Sea products (fish, crustaceans and molluscs, accounting for 35.6 percent of the total), a category which posted a significant fall, followed by Clothing and Related Products (34.7 percent), which saw string growth, Footwear and Related Products (24 percent), with a slight fall, and Alcoholic Beverages (3.4 percent).
Europe imported 79 percent of all Cape Verde’s exports, which was more than in 2006 when it imported 75 percent, with Portugal the destination of 58 percent of all products (44 percent in 2006).
The main products imported by Cape Verde in 2007 were aircraft, with the acquisition of new airplanes by domestic airlines, fuel, machines and construction materials, food and drink, machines and transport accessories, which together accounted for over half of total imports. Source: (macauhub)
August 3rd, 2008 — Cape Verde, Praia
I read recently that an agreement had been signed to modernize and extend the port of Praia, expected to cost some US$42.3 million. Its reported that representatives of the Millennium Challenge Account management unit - Cape Verde (MCA-CV) and the Somague/Moniz da Maia Serra & Fortunato Empreiteiros (MFS) are due Wednesday to sign the contract for carrying out the construction work on Phase 1 of the port of Praia. As part of the project a new cargo terminal will be built along with and a new access road, quay number 2 at the port will also be renovated. Exciting times are ahead for the islands and there people.
